In the city of Hampi, the dry farter is king

Hampi, In the city of Hampi, the dry farter is king

It seems that my guide book left out a piece of advice about Hampi: dont eat or drink anything here.

My stomach is pretty robust, my brain is good at upsetting it but otherwise once acclimatised to a country I rarely have any problems. Ive been eating in roadside places with truckers, Dal frys with chapaties and flies, the various deep fried everything from street vendors which isnt always fresh.

On the whole I dont eat anything that is uncooked or unpeeled, this is tough as it keeps me away from salads. I stay away from meat and Ive been fine following my digestive reboot in Bombay.

My water regimen is very strict too, absolutely no ice, I clean my teeth with bottled water and keep my mouth tightly shut while showering, thats when I have the luxury of a shower and not a tap and bucket.

I made one of my few exceptions as Shanti which has a very clean kitchen and had a chicken masala which was pretty crap and garlic chips equally crap, the only things I had from the menu which weren't ok.

Well after a very uncomfortable night I eventually started throwing up around 4am, later during the morning I wasnt even keeping water down, but I dont mind this so much as it gives the stomach a good clean. Around 3pm I was feeling pretty ok and hungry so I had the muesli, the curd is very good for your stomach and I was feeling fine.

The next day I breakfasted on more of the same and had a good day walking all around the Royal enclosure/ Islamic quarter and all seemed good for a morning kick-off. That night my stomach was a little unsettled but nothing bad, but the next morning it was clear my bowel had decided that it didnt want to be left out of the pyjama party so I started on the extra course of antibiotics I had brough with me from Mumbai.

The Israeli couple asked how I was feeling and shared the news from the Israeli community that around a third of them (ten in all) were ill and there was an Auzzie woman who was unwell too.

Learning all this I decided that if I could walk I was leaving the next day as I didnt want to be around any longer, a number of the people had been there over a week trying to get better and I had already been there two days over my plan and although only 10e a night, it was five times what Ive become accustomed too.

Surprisingly there are no photographs with this entry.
